My personal magnesium routine

Irene Falcone with Elektra magnesium flakes

I first discovered magnesium at the Sydney Organic Expo in 2013, I met the owners of Amazing You (they were called Amazing Oils back then) and Elektra, I tried both a roll on gel and bath flakes that day, and that night I had the best sleep of my life. That was really how my love for magnesium started.

A warm magnesium bath after work is still my favourite way to wind down, especially after a long day at the warehouse. I always put a pinch of food grade flakes in my filtered drinking water, and I love using magnesium cream on my son's legs at night to help with his growing pains. There are so many more magnesium options now, it can be hard to know where to start, but after using and selling magnesium for over 10 years, here are 7 of my favourites.

7 of my favourite magnesium products

  1. 1

Elektra Magnesium Chloride Flakes Food Grade

These are the best magnesium chloride flakes. They are food grade so not only does the body absorb all that elemental magnesium when you soak in them, you can also add a few flakes to your water and drink. It makes the water taste nice & soft too.

This is a pure magnesium chloride concentrate that you add to water to turn it into a completely natural electrolyte drink for a hydration boost. I add 6-10 drops to my water every day!

An oldie but a goodie! A must have carry everywhere magnesium gel. This was the first Magnesium product I ever used and still use it today over 10 years on. Just rub it over anywhere that's sore or stiff or if you need a boost of energy or a moment of calmness.

MooGoo Muscle Magic Magnesium Moisturiser 120g

This is the best magnesium cream for sleeping, my 15yo son and I are both obsessed with it. It's fragrance free, and has absolutely no sticky residue. I rub this on his growing legs at night and we both fall asleep so fast afterwards.

Amazing You Ugly Bits Stick Blemish Correction 15ml

This is a spot treatment for the skin. It’s a concentrated blast of pure magnesium chloride that targets blemishes and other imperfections. When it first launched, it was very controversial because of the name, but it has stood the test of time. I use it on the pigmentation that pops up on the backs of my hands and on little breakouts.

What's the difference between magnesium flakes and Epsom salts?

Magnesium flakes are magnesium chloride, while Epsom salts are magnesium sulphate. They look almost identical in the bag, but they are very different. Magnesium chloride carries 15 to 16% elemental magnesium compared to Epsom salts which has just 9 to 10%. Epsom salts are man made and can also be drying on the skin, while pure magnesium chloride is naturally sourced. This is why I don't sell Epsom salts at Clean Nectarine. Want to know more? I've written this blog on The Difference Between Magnesium Flakes & Epsom Salts.
