Why every toothpaste here is fluoride free

I created Clean Nectarine so you can shop without having to decode ingredient lists or wonder where the line is drawn. Many clean stores stop at banning the obvious offenders like SLS and parabens, which is a good start, but I choose to go further. Every product in this collection is checked against our NO List before it earns a spot, which rules out fluoride, phenoxyethanol and propylene glycol and other ingredients still found in many health store toothpastes.

Natural toothpaste, floss, tongue scrapers and teeth whitening

Clean dental care covers a lot more than the morning brush. Our collection includes Hydroxyapatite toothpaste from Australian made brands like Grants and MooGoo, waste-free tooth powder, xylitol toothpaste and charcoal toothpaste. For little ones, we have kids and baby toothpaste including Jack N' Jill, the brand both of my kids grew up on. Then comes the rest of the routine: natural dental floss like Dr Tung's, which gently expands between your teeth, floss picks for your handbag, herbal mouthwash concentrates in glass bottles, tongue scrapers for fresher breath and gentle teeth whitening that brightens without the burn. All Clean Nectarine clean.

Natural Dental care FAQs

1. What is hydroxyapatite toothpaste?

Hydroxyapatite toothpaste uses a form of calcium that makes up most of your tooth enamel to help remineralise the tooth surface, and it is the ingredient I choose instead of fluoride. Most of the hydroxyapatite toothpaste here is non nano, including Grants and Oh GiGi, which are both Australian made. If you want the full story on nano vs non nano, I break it down in Nano vs Non-Nano Hydroxyapatite Toothpaste Explained.

2. Why are all your toothpastes fluoride free?

Fluoride is one of the ingredients I have chosen not to stock, even though plenty of "all natural" toothpastes in health stores still contain it. Keeping every toothpaste fluoride free means every option here already meets the same higher ingredient standard, with hydroxyapatite stepping in as my preferred alternative.

3. Is Grants toothpaste natural?

Yes. Grants of Australia is one of the original Australian natural toothpaste brands, and every Grants toothpaste we stock is fluoride free and SLS free. We have the range across whitening, sensitive and hydroxyapatite formulas, including the Grants Whitening + HA toothpaste I use most mornings.

4. Do you have natural toothpaste for kids?

Yes, and kids dental care is about habits first, perfection second. We have kids and baby toothpaste that is fluoride free, naturally flavoured and gentle, including Jack N' Jill, the brand both of my kids grew up on. Some are hydroxyapatite based, others are simple herbal formulas, and there is a flavour free option for fussy little ones.

5. What does a tongue scraper do?

A tongue scraper sweeps away the coating that builds up on your tongue overnight, which is where a lot of the bacteria behind bad breath likes to hide. It is a practice borrowed from Ayurveda and it takes about ten seconds. I like a copper tongue cleaner, and one quick sweep each morning makes your whole mouth feel fresher before you have even brushed.

6. Does natural teeth whitening work?

Gentle whitening can help lift the surface stains that come from coffee, tea and red wine, without the harsh peroxide levels in conventional whitening kits. We have whitening toothpaste from Grants and a whitening pen from Gem, which is the cleanest whitener I have found so far.
