Dental floss & picks FAQs

Why do you avoid conventional dental floss?

Many conventional dental flosses are made using petrochemical-based materials and coatings such as PTFE, which is a type of plastic often associated with PFAS. These ingredients are used to make floss slide more easily, but they are not ingredients I am comfortable including in a daily oral care routine.

At Clean Nectarine, I choose flosses that avoid these materials and instead focus on effective cleaning without relying on petrochemical coatings. Flossing works best alongside regular brushing with a natural toothpaste and, if you enjoy it, a finishing step like mouthwash.

What are natural dental flosses made from?

Natural dental flosses are typically made from alternatives to PTFE, such as silk or plant-based fibres. Some are lightly coated with natural waxes or infused with essential oils to improve grip and comfort, without relying on petrochemical ingredients.

Are natural flosses as effective as conventional floss?

Yes. In fact, some natural flosses are designed to work even better. A good example is Dr Tung’s Smart Floss, which has a soft, expanding texture that grips between the teeth rather than slipping straight through. Brand testing shows it can remove significantly more plaque than standard floss, while still feeling gentle.

What do you recommend if I am not sure where to start?

If I had to pick one everyday option, Dr Tung’s Smart Floss is the one I reach for most often. For on-the-go use, I keep a tin of Gem Floss Picks On The Go in my bag. They make it easy to floss after meals when you are out, which is far better than skipping flossing altogether.

Are floss picks as good as traditional floss?

Floss picks are not necessarily better than traditional floss, but they are very convenient. If picks help you floss more consistently, they are a great addition to your routine.

How often should I floss?

Once a day is a great goal for most people. Consistency matters more than perfection, and even flossing most days is far better than not flossing at all.
