I first discovered the benefits of magnesium after visiting the Organic Expo where I met the passionate founders of Elektra Magnesium. I took home a bag of flakes to try on a whim, at the time I just assumed they were a premium version of Epsom Salts but oh boy was I wrong. My legs were sore from walking around the expo all day so I added some in my bath that night which led to the best sleep I ever had, which led to my 10 year obsession with Magnesium Chloride.

What is Magnesium?

Magnesium is an essential mineral that our bodies needs. It’s the eighth most abundant element in the earth’s crust and is found naturally occurring in rocks, wholefoods and water. Magnesium plays a role in over 600 chemical reactions within our bodies including boosting energy levels and supporting a deep sleep. A magnesium deficiency in this mineral can lead to various health issues such as muscle cramps, fatigue, irregular heartbeat, and even more severe conditions in the long term. It's always best to speak to your healthcare professional about any supplementation you might need.

Magnesium rich foods include leafy greens like spinach & kale, and nuts and seeds, legumes like beans, lentils & chickpeas, avocado, bananas and (my favourite) Dark chocolate. However due to modern farming practices, Approximately 70% of the population in Australia are deficient in magnesium. The Australian Government guidelines RDI of magnesium is 320mg/day for females and 420mg/day for males.

What are the benefits of Magnesium?

Some of the key magnesium benefits include an increase in overall energy levels, and contribute to feeling more energetic, muscle relaxation, better sleep quality, improved digestion, regulation of blood sugar, heart & bone health.

Epsom Salt vs Magnesium Chloride Flakes

Visually both Epsom salts and Magnesium Chloride can look similar, however they are completely different chemical compounds. Epsom salts are chemically known as magnesium sulphate, these are inexpensive and widely available and can offer relaxation benefits when added to a bath time routine. But these salts won’t add additional magnesium chloride supplementation to the body.

Magnesium Chloride can be found in the form of flakes which can be added to a bath (or foot bath), oil or creams to provide elemental magnesium to the body. This type of magnesium can be absorbed via the skin which means there is no risk of supplements being destroyed by the gut or upsetting the tummy.

If you are new to the wonderful world of magnesium, the Elektra food grade Magnesium Chloride flakes are a great way to start. These are sourced from naturally evaporated Tibetan salt water located 3,000m above sea level and contain over 16% elemental Magnesium. Add a cup to your bath (or 2 tablespoons to a foot bath) and soak up all the goodness. You can also add small pinch to your drinking water to boost hydration.
