You'll find bicarb in lots of natural toothpastes. It's a natural ingredient and great for whitening and lifting surface stains. But it's not for everyone. It can be a bit harsh for sensitive gums. So I went through our toothpaste section and found these great bicarb-free options, and like every toothpaste I sell, they're all fluoride-free too.
Is bicarb safe in toothpaste?
Yes. Bicarb, which is also known as sodium bicarbonate on the back of the label or baking soda in the kitchen, is one of the gentlest cleaning ingredients used in toothpaste. It's just a bit much for sensitive mouths and gums.
What are the best bicarb alternatives?
Bicarb-free toothpastes clean with other natural ingredients like calcium carbonate (which is natural chalk), hydroxyapatite, sea salt, silica and food-grade hydrogen peroxide. Some use traditional plants too, like ratanhia root.

Developed with dentists, this toothpaste uses ratanhia root, which has traditionally been used in Peru to clean the teeth, plus myrrh to calm the gums, and it has a fresh minty flavour.

This certified organic toothpaste uses food-grade hydrogen peroxide to lift surface stains, with organic aloe vera and coconut oil. It has a fresh peppermint flavour with spearmint, clove and cinnamon.
