I’ve been selling Grants since 2014, and it’s still one of my all-time favourite natural toothpastes.
I first discovered Grants Toothpaste at my mum’s house, before I realised it was my mission in life to help people find amazing natural and toxin-free products. I grew up using it and never knew. When I moved out of home, got married and started a family of my own, I just bought the regular toothpaste from the supermarket. Then I was back at Mum’s one day in the mid 2000s, and I noticed a tube of Grants Mild Mint in her bathroom with ‘fluoride-free’ on it. When I asked her why there was no fluoride in her toothpaste, she looked at me strangely and said it was what our whole family had been using since the 80s. I’d never even noticed.
The reason it never registered is that Grants looks and tastes just like a regular mainstream toothpaste. This was all before my toxin-free epiphany, the day I threw almost every product in my house into a garbage bag, and my supermarket toothpaste was definitely one of the things in there. It took a really long time to replace everything I’d thrown away (so long that the journey ended up as a blog, which then turned into my first business). But Grants was one of my quick, easy swaps.
The Grants range has grown a lot since those early days, and I’ve written about them many times over the years on my original blog, but it’s time for a fresh update.
A bit of history on Grants toothpaste
The first tube of Grants launched in 1984, when Mike and Michelle Aronson, who ran a health food shop in Prahran in Melbourne, made their own natural toothpaste after they couldn’t find a fluoride-free one they liked for their family. It was called Grants Mineral & Herbal, which is the one we now know as Mild Mint, and the name Grants was named after the street they were living on at the time.
More than forty years later, it’s still family owned and run and I’ve been working with their daughter Tammy since I started stocking the range in 2014. Grants is certified Australian Made right down to the tubes and cartons, the whole range is SLS-free, with bicarb-free and preservative-free options too. Plus they are all very reasonably priced
The full Grants range, flavour by flavour
I sell the entire fluoride-free range of Grants at Clean Nectarine (they do have a toothpaste with fluoride, but since I don’t sell any fluoride toothpaste I haven’t included that in this guide). So with the fluoride one aside the rest of the range gets my full 3/3 nectarine rating, the mark I give the cleanest products on the site.
Mild Mint
The Grants Mild Mint is the one that started it all, first made in 1984 as Mineral & Herbal. It’s made with organic aloe vera, and the mild mint flavour comes from a natural blend of mint oil, eucalyptus, cardamom, anise, caraway, coriander, rosemary and clary sage. It’s a great everyday option for the whole family, gentle on sensitive gums, and it leaves your mouth feeling fresh without being overpowering. It’s preservative free and bicarb free. Plus we have a travel size in our travel & minis section so you can avoid the typical toothpastes you get on planes and in hotels.
Fresh Mint
The Fresh Mint is also a Grants golden oldie, it’s the stronger stepped-up version of the Mild Mint. It was originally called Extra Fresh. It has a sparkling spearmint and peppermint hit with menthol and a slightly herbaceous flavour from certified organic tea tree oil. It’s also preservative free and bicarb free.
Cinnamon
The Grants Cinnamon has been part of the range since 2011, and it’s something fun and different, it has a sweet, warm spiced flavour from cinnamon oil and orange peel, with added neem and aloe for gum health. It’s also preservative free and bicarb free.
Kids Blueberry Burst & Strawberry Surprise
In 2017 Grants added these two kids toothpastes to their range. Both are preservative free and bicarb free, and use calcium carbonate and silica to gently clean the teeth and mouth, with delicious fruity tastes, one blueberry and one strawberry. They also contain xylitol, which helps stop bacteria from sticking to the teeth and forming plaque. They’re low-foaming to help little ones learn to spit it out, with no added sugar, and made for ages two and up.
Propolis
The Grants Propolis launched in 2018, it’s made with bee propolis, the resin bees make to protect their hive. It’s used here for its natural antibacterial and antiseptic properties. It also contains certified organic tea tree oil and has a strong, fresh mint taste. It’s preservative free and bicarb free.
Sensitive
The Grants Sensitive launched in 2019. It’s made with potassium nitrate, which is the active ingredient in anti-sensitivity toothpastes, to help reduce and relieve tooth sensitivity. It has a very mild mint flavour that’s gentle on reactive teeth and gums. It’s preservative free and bicarb free. (This toothpaste is TGA listed. Always read the label and follow the directions for use. If symptoms persist, talk to your health professional. Use in children under 12 is not recommended.)
Whitening Peppermint
The Grants Whitening Peppermint was the first whitening tube Grants made, back in 2019. It has a cool peppermint taste that leaves the mouth feeling fresh and clean, and baking soda to naturally whiten teeth and remove stains. It’s made with peppermint oil and menthol, and it’s preservative free.
Whitening Spearmint
The Grants Whitening Spearmint launched in 2021, it’s a sweeter, softer version of the Whitening Peppermint. It has spearmint oil and less menthol, with the same baking soda to naturally whiten teeth and remove stains. It’s preservative free.
Flavour Free
The Grants Flavour Free launched in 2021. It’s free from any flavours and bicarb free too. It’s a great option for anyone using homeopathic remedies or for sensory-sensitive kids and adults. It uses a combination of silica and dicalcium phosphate to clean the teeth, these are two mild mineral cleansers that help lift plaque and surface stains without scratching.
Whitening +HA (Hydroxyapatite)
This is their most recent toothpaste, it launched in 2025, it’s preservative free and made with non-nano hydroxyapatite, which is the same mineral our enamel is made from, so it’s good for helping to remineralise the teeth and fill in any tiny holes. This also comes in a handy travel size.
