"What I'm looking for is a sense of vitality. That's a combination of motivation, inspiration, excitement, willingness, creativity."
If you're like me and grew up in the 80s and 90s, we got so much of our health information from magazines like Dolly and Cosmo. Do you remember those Elle Macpherson TAB cola ads promoting that they were only one calorie?
We don't need to get our information from paid advertisers now. We're in such an incredible era for wellbeing, where doctors and health experts share their knowledge with us through social media, and we're also able to get information from different points of view.
I learned so much from Elle Macpherson in my interview with her on my Talking Clean With Irene podcast. She was incredibly inspirational, a pioneer in so many areas and passionate about women's wellness.
Here are the 3 things I learned from my chat with Elle
1. There's two types of energy
Because we're businesswomen, all we have is our health and our energy. And even just as a busy mum, that's all we have. If we can't run around after our kids and function and cook dinner and do all those things, then we're in bed and feeling crap.
Elle explained, "Energy, there's two types of energy. There's the energy that is a sort of artificial stimulant that keeps you going and you just get on and you do what you have to do. I achieved so much during the day, but really at what cost?"
"What I'm looking for is a sense of vitality. That's a combination of motivation, inspiration, excitement, willingness, creativity, and that comes from deep within the soul, from the spirit and within the body when the body's functioning really well."
"It's not like a peripheral energy boost that you get from a cup of coffee or from a Red Bull or something like that."
2. Small steps, big changes
Elle told me, "When I turned 50, I sort of came to the understanding that I can't rely on genetics for the rest of my life and I can't keep doing the same things I did when I was in my 30s and 40s and expect that it was gonna work at 50. I was tired, I was run down, I was sleeping sporadically, I had brain fog, my skin was dry, it was dull, it was uneven. I had sugar cravings, I was addicted to coffee."
"I finally settled on Dr Laubscher in the UK. Dr Laubscher had said to me, 'I really think you need to stop running.' I do yoga, I do Pilates. I walk, I go on my bicycle, but I don't run anymore."
"For me, it was like I started taking the greens, then I stopped eating sugar, then I started wanting to work out more, and then I started sleeping more. And then I was a happier person. And then when there's more joy in your life, you're healthier. So it's sort of like small steps but have big implications in your life."
3. Healthy lymph, healthy body
"I'm more interested in the value of detoxing, you know, of moving the lymph through the body," she said. "I think it's super important and something that people forget about."
"We have to keep it moving and we can keep it moving by doing various things. I like jumping on a small trampoline. I have a little bouncer, which I do that gets the lymph going."
"But you can do it yourself too. Don't forget, using the dry body brush. Massaging yourself when you put on your creams, just take the time to really massage, particularly around your ankles and calves. The other thing that's really good is before you go to bed, lying on your back and do bicycles."
"People kind of talk about their circulatory system, they talk about burning fat, they talk about all those kind of things, but the lymph is, you know, healthy lymph, healthy body."
