I have been lucky enough to uncover some incredible hidden gems over the years, and one of my most interesting finds has been birch. We know birch trees make beautiful furniture, but the sap and leaves of this plant also have real benefits for our skin. Here's what you need to know.
The history of the birch tree
Between May and June, the birch tree pushes out strong new growth. Associated with the Norse goddess Freya, the birch tree has enjoyed a sacred reputation for centuries. In German and Slavonic traditions, bringing a birch tree into the village symbolised the awakening of spring. This custom has survived to this day, with the birch maypole still standing in many European town squares. Traditionally, bachelors would even present a decorated birch tree to their beloved as a symbol of health.
Our ancestors used the sap as a strengthening remedy, and a decoction of the leaves was used to calm the skin and support wound recovery. In Northern Europe and Russia, it was also valued for its vitamin C content.
Can birch help with cellulite?
Cellulite is a non-medical term used to describe the normal fat deposits under our skin that create a dimpled or "orange peel" effect. It occurs when fat cells in the deeper layers of the skin increase in size, causing the fibrous tissue strands that connect the skin to the underlying muscle to pull tight while the fat pushes upward, creating that textured appearance on the surface. According to a review published in the Aesthetic Surgery Journal Open Forum, cellulite affects between 80 and 90 percent of women, regardless of weight or fitness level, and is strongly influenced by oestrogen levels. As oestrogen declines during perimenopause and menopause, blood flow to the connective tissue decreases, collagen production slows, and the appearance of cellulite can become more noticeable.
Birch leaf extract has long been used to support circulation and help the skin look and feel firmer. When massaged into the skin alongside ingredients like organic rosemary, it helps stimulate blood flow to the surface and support the skin's natural tone and texture.
Weleda harvests around 500 tonnes of young birch leaves each year. Some come from their own biodynamic gardens in Derbyshire, UK, but the majority are gathered through long-standing fair-trade partnerships, primarily in the Czech Republic. Whether grown in their own gardens or sourced externally, all birch ingredients are cultivated according to strict organic or biodynamic principles.
My favourite birch products for the body
Here are some of my favourite natural body products that use birch in their formulation.
1. Weleda Birch Cellulite Oil
The Weleda Birch Cellulite Oil is a body oil made with silver birch leaf extract and a blend of nourishing plant oils including apricot kernel, jojoba and wheatgerm. It also contains organic rosemary to stimulate circulation and organic ruscus, traditionally used for its anti-inflammatory properties. In an independent 28-day study conducted by a team of German dermatologists, skin was measured to be 22% firmer and 21% smoother.
2. Weleda Birch Pearl Body Scrub
The Weleda Birch Pearl Body Scrub is an exfoliating and smoothing scrub that uses hydrating plant wax pearls to gently lift away dead skin cells, support cell turnover and stimulate circulation. The invigorating blend of birch extract, grapefruit, citrus and cypress creates a fresh, zingy scent. In a consumer study, 88% of participants reported their skin felt smoother and softer. Use once or twice a week before applying body oil for best absorption.
3. Weleda Arnica Muscle Soak
The Weleda Arnica Muscle Soak is a soothing bath milk that combines arnica flower extract and birch leaf extract with rosemary and lavender essential oils. A wonderful addition to the bath after exercise or a long day on your feet.
4. Dr Hauschka Regenerating Body Cream
The Dr Hauschka Regenerating Body Cream is a rich body moisturiser with rose, orange and vanilla, designed to support the skin's natural regenerative functions and leave skin feeling smooth, firm and supple. It contains phytoestrogen-rich red clover and field horsetail, alongside birch leaves and marshmallow.
5. Dr Hauschka Regenerating Neck and Décolleté Cream
The Dr Hauschka Regenerating Neck and Décolleté Cream is a natural neck firming cream specifically designed for mature skin 40+ that cares for the face, neck and décolleté as one connected area. It contains marshmallow, birch leaves and red clover for hydration, macadamia nut and argan oils for nourishment and whole pomegranate, including the peel, to support skin regeneration.
How to use these birch products together
The Birch Body Scrub can be used weekly in the shower to exfoliate and prepare the skin, then follow with the Birch Cellulite Oil while the skin is still slightly warm and damp. Massage the oil into the skin using firm upward strokes, focusing on the thighs, hips and buttocks. The Dr Hauschka Regenerating Body Cream is a lovely everyday option that keeps the skin nourished between treatments, and the Dr Hauschka Regenerating Neck and Décolleté Cream can be used daily.
The Arnica Muscle Soak makes a wonderful bath addition, combining arnica and birch with rosemary and lavender to help the body unwind after a long day or a workout.
