The Original BB Cream Since 1989: The Dr. Hauschka Tinted Day Cream

A true golden oldie of the natural beauty world. This is the original BB cream and it launched in one of my favourite years, 1989!

The Original BB Cream Since 1989: The Dr. Hauschka Tinted Day Cream

The 80s brought us so much. Blue eyeshadow, perms and the OG BB cream. Yes, that's a photo of me from 1989.

There are some natural skincare products that have really stood the test of time. I call these the golden oldies of the natural beauty world, and the Dr. Hauschka Tinted Day Cream is one of them. It launched in 1989 (as the Toned Day Cream back then), way before BB creams became popular, but it was already doing everything a good BB cream does: hydrate, provide light coverage, blend away imperfections and redness, and give the skin a healthy glow.

A little history on that launch date, because it took some finding. When I first wrote about this cream in 2016, back when I owned my first store Nourished Life, the launch date wasn't published anywhere. So I asked, and the question went all the way to WALA's head office in Germany, who went through their archives to confirm it for me: 1989.

What I Love About the Dr. Hauschka Tinted Day Cream

It's Certified Organic

It's certified organic to NATRUE standards and free from synthetic fragrances, dyes, and preservatives. The scent comes entirely from natural plant extracts of Rose Water, Rose Wax, Lemon Peel and Jasmine, giving it a light, subtle floral aroma that suits anyone sensitive to strong perfumes. It is also dermatologically tested and suitable for every skin type, including sensitive skin.

The Botanical Ingredients

The formula is built on time-tested medicinal plants, including almond oil to moisturise and nourish, rose water and anthyllis extract to calm and harmonise, beeswax and rose wax to help the skin hold onto moisture, and quince seeds and St. John's wort to support skin tone and elasticity.

And here's the golden oldie proof: the formula has only been optimised once in all that time. Zinc sulfate and lactose were added for a more stable emulsion, the consistency and spreadability were improved, and the natural essential oil fragrance shifted a touch further towards rose. Otherwise, it's the cream it was in 1989.

The No-Makeup Makeup Finish

It has a dewy, hydrating finish like no other. I have dry, mature skin, and this gives me exactly the level of luminosity I want. It comes in just one shade, but it's very adaptive and blends into the skin, evening out pigmentation and imperfections while adding a subtle warmth to the face without looking like you're wearing makeup. It suits normal to very dry, sensitive and mature skin, and it doesn’t settle into fine lines. There are more options for mature skin in my guide to natural makeup for skin over 40.

The Plastic-Free Packaging

The recyclable aluminium tube helps preserve the cream by providing a strong barrier against light, air and moisture. The inside of the tube is lined with a food-grade coating, so there is no contact between the cream and the aluminium.

How Do You Use the Dr. Hauschka Tinted Day Cream?

Use it in place of your usual day cream. Each morning after toning, while the skin is still slightly moist, warm a pea-sized amount between your palms and press it into the skin rather than rubbing it in. It keeps the skin moisturised throughout the day, and I use a Vitamin C serum underneath. One thing it does not contain is SPF, so apply your face sunscreen once the cream has fully absorbed.

If you have really dry skin like me, you can add this after your regular day cream, or if you just want a hint of colour you can mix it into your day cream too.
