Nature's Toothbrush: The Benefits of Neem

Did you know that neem has been used in Ayurvedic oral care for centuries? Traditional healers across India used neem twigs as natural toothbrushes long before toothpaste existed. It's such an interesting ingredient, and there's some emerging research around its potential benefits.

Why Neem is known as the Miracle Tree

Neem (Azadirachta indica) is often called the "Miracle Tree" in Ayurvedic tradition. It has been used for centuries across India, with the leaves, bark, seeds, and oil all used in different ways in traditional practices. In Ayurvedic terms, it is valued for its ability to support balance across the Vata, Pitta, and Kapha doshas.

What the science says about neem and oral hygiene

Traditional Ayurvedic practices place a strong emphasis on daily oral care. When bacteria builds up, it can contribute to plaque, tartar, and gum discomfort.

Neem has been studied for its antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, which may support oral hygiene. A 2020 clinical trial published in the Journal of Pharmacy & BioAllied Sciences compared a neem extract gel to a standard chlorhexidine mouthwash gel. The researchers found that the neem gel showed a significant reduction in dental plaque, gingival inflammation, and microbial counts (including Streptococcus mutans, a bacteria associated with tooth decay), with results comparable to the control.

Another randomised, double-blind clinical trial published in The Journal of Contemporary Dental Practice in 2015 tested a neem-containing toothpaste on 30 young adults over 30 days. The study reported a statistically significant reduction in both plaque and gingivitis scores, suggesting neem toothpaste may be a helpful addition to daily oral care.

My favourite neem oral care products

The Auromere Ayurvedic Toothpaste in Mint Free is a concentrated toothpaste rooted in Ayurvedic tradition. Its formula combines neem and peelu with 22 other barks, roots, plants and flowers, and is naturally sweetened with liquorice root. It has a pleasant, mild flavour without any mint, eucalyptus or menthol, making it a considered choice for those following homeopathic protocols. Each tube lasts up to three times longer than regular toothpaste.

The Auromere Ayurvedic Toothpaste in Cardamom Fennel uses the same blend of neem, peelu and herbal extracts, but with a warm, aromatic cardamom and fennel flavour. It is foam-free, fluoride-free, sulfate-free, and free from artificial colours and sweeteners. Like the Mint Free version, it is an authentic Ayurvedic product of India, with 10% of profits donated to the development of Auroville.

Neem is also a key ingredient in the Auromere Mouthwash Ayurvedic Neem & Peelu. This is a natural, alcohol-free and fluoride-free mouthwash made with 23 traditional herbal extracts. Neem and peelu work together to help cleanse the mouth and support fresh breath.

How to use these neem products together

For your morning routine, start with tongue scraping before eating or drinking anything. Then use a pea-sized amount of either Auromere toothpaste to gently clean the teeth and gums, followed by a quick rinse of the mouthwash to finish.
