How to Make the Best Turmeric Latte for Gut Health

How to Make the Best Turmeric Latte for Gut Health

My friend Lee Holmes first introduced me to turmeric lattes. I was asking her how to use her Golden Gut Powder and she showed me how to make this. Lee is a clinical nutritionist, author, and the best cook I have ever met. I have been making my lattes like this ever since and it is one of my favourite things to recommend to anyone looking to cut back on coffee. It is warming, delicious, and rooted in centuries of Ayurvedic tradition.

As I talk about in my guide to Ayurveda, my dominant dosha is Vata, and Vata types love warmth, routine, and anything grounding. I make this most afternoons around 4pm as a coffee alternative and it's also delicious over ice in summer! But what I love about this drink is that turmeric is considered tridoshic in Ayurveda, meaning it is balancing for all three doshas. Whether you are Vata, Pitta, or Kapha, the combination of turmeric, ginger, black pepper, and fat will works with your constitution.

Traditional uses of turmeric

Turmeric has been used in Ayurvedic traditions for thousands of years. This warm, golden spice contains curcumin and other bioactive compounds that have been the subject of numerous scientific studies.

What makes this golden spice interesting is how it interacts with other ingredients. Curcumin is fat-soluble, meaning it combines with fats rather than water. It also pairs beautifully with black pepper, which contains piperine, a compound that studies suggest may affect how the body processes curcumin. This is why traditional Ayurvedic recipes almost always combine turmeric with warming spices like ginger, cinnamon, and black pepper, along with a touch of healthy fat and sweetness.

The perfect golden blend

A traditional golden latte brings all of these elements together and this recipe uses Lee's Supercharged Food Golden Gut Powder, this whole-food formula includes the gut-loving benefits of the original Love Your Gut Powder combined organic turmeric, organic black pepper, organic ginger and organic cinnamon. It is vegan, made in Australia, and it can be also be used in smoothies, soups, baked goodies, and savoury dishes like curries.

Golden Gut Latte recipe

Making your own turmeric latte is easy with this simple recipe. You get the warming flavours of traditional golden milk with the added mineral content from diatomaceous earth.

Ingredients (Serves 1)

  • 1-2 teaspoons Supercharged Food Golden Gut Powder
  • 1 cup milk of your choice (coconut, almond or oat milk all work beautifully)
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract (optional)
  • 1 teaspoon honey or maple syrup to taste (optional)
  • Pinch of extra cinnamon for garnish

Directions

  1. In a small saucepan, gently warm your chosen milk over medium-low heat. Be careful not to boil.
  2. Whisk in the Golden Gut Powder until completely dissolved, ensuring there are no clumps.
  3. Add vanilla extract and sweetener if desired, continuing to whisk until the mixture is smooth and fragrant.
  4. Once warmed through (about 3-5 minutes), pour into your favourite mug and dust with a sprinkle of cinnamon.
  5. For a café-style latte, use a milk frother to create a creamy foam on top.
